![]() ![]() We also have a pre-operative safety checklist in addition to our institutional OR standards that ensures blood type and serology acknowledgement prior to entering the OR. I personally ensure that all recipient studies are confirmed using a standard checklist for our program that includes the detailed review of all pre-operative studies. Recipients are prepared for the operating room (OR) well in advance by completing their routine studies. The bulk of the decision-making should be made preoperatively and can be modified based on intraoperative hemodynamic stability. The decision as to whether to use extracorporeal support during bilateral lung transplantation varies with institutional experience and with patient selection. Operative techniques and critical care, however, continue to evolve and 1- and 5-year outcomes continue to improve ( 5, 7). This is supported by evidence within the literature that has identified a long-term survival benefit from bilateral as opposed to single lung transplantation ( 5, 6). The majority of transplants performed today are bilateral sequential procedures ( 3). The number of procedures performed continues to increase every year with an estimated 3,000 transplants being performed annually ( 1). Lung transplantation is the most effective treatment modality for end-stage pulmonary disease ( 1- 4). However, worldwide effrots to improve data have been limited to spordic and short-term measures. International efforts to improve comparability of vital statistics seem to be effective, and there is reasonable progress in collection and publication of data. Only a few developing countries have been able to improve their civil registration and vital statistics systems in the past 50 years. With use of routine reports to the UN and cause-of-death data reported to WHO, we review the present situation and past trends of vital statistics in the world and note little improvement in worldwide availability of general vital statistics or cause-of-death statistics. In the second paper in this Series we propose a comprehensive and practical framework for assessment of the quality of vital statistics. ![]() The usefulness of vital statistics depends on their quality. ![]() Vital statistics generated through civil registration system are the major source of continuous monitoring of births and deaths over time. It is possible to say that SLS has the attributes of construct, content, and curricular validity. From the data gathered from 476 participants the Cronbach alpha coefficient was calculated as. Content validity was assured with SLCRF results. The construct validity of SLS was examined with experts’ item based opinions and results of factor analysis. SLS was administered to 476 undergraduate students. Then, the number of questions was reduced to 17 and Statistical Literacy Scale (SLS) was developed. Based on the results, the number of questions was reduced to 20 and it was tried again with a sample consisting of 90 participants. Suggested questions were examined by experts and the 42 questions were chosen and tried out with a pilot study with 33 participants. For topics that questions in the literature are insufficient then new questions were written by the researcher. Content coverage was determined according to scholars’ answers, and then questions were selected among existing instruments in the literature. Scholars who were offering statistics and research methods courses were asked which statistics topics undergraduate students are required to know for being statistically literate. A Statistical Content Rating Form (SLCRF) was formed in the light of knowledge and skills involved in the related domain. Statistics content covered in previous instruments on statistics learning (CAOS- Web ARTIST Project, 2005 Statistical Literacy Skills Survey, Schield, 2008 ARTIST Topic Scales, 2006) and 6-12 grades curricula implemented in Turkey were examined. The aim of this study was to develop a valid and reliable instrument measuring statistical literacy for university students. Statistical literacy was defined as the ability to understand basic concepts, vocabulary and symbol of statistics, and some probability and critically evaluate statistical information in everyday life situations. ![]()
